چکیده

We present the results of the “Quasars near Quasars” (QNQ) survey, a CCD-based slitless spectroscopic survey for faint V <∼ 22 quasars at 1.7 <∼ z <∼ 3.6 on 18 26.2 × 33.5 fields centred on bright quasars at 2.76 < z < 4.69. In total 169 quasar candidates with emission lines were selected from the extracted flux-calibrated spectra on the basis of well-defined automatic selection criteria followed by visual inspection and verification. With follow-up spectroscopy of 81 candidates that were likely to reside at z > 1.7 we were able to confirm 80 new quasars at 0.580 ≤ z ≤ 3.586 on 16 of our fields. 64 of the newly discovered quasars are located at z > 1.7. The overall high success rate implies that most of the remaining 88 candidates are quasars as well, although the majority of them likely resides at z < 1.7 on the basis of the observed line shapes and strengths. Due to the insufficient depth of the input source catalogues needed for extraction of the slitless spectra our survey is not well defined in terms of limiting magnitude for faint 2.5 <∼ z <∼ 3.6 quasars whose Lyα emission is detectable well beyond V = 22, albeit at a continuum S/N <∼ 1. While not useful for characterising the evolving space density of quasars, our sample provides many new closely spaced quasar sightlines around intensely studied quasars for further investigations on the three-dimensional distribution of the intergalactic medium.

Dust Reddened Quasars in First and Ukidss: beyond the Tip of the Iceberg

We present the results of a pilot survey to find dust-reddened quasars by matching the FIRST radio catalog to the UKIDSS near-infrared survey, and using optical data from SDSS to select objects with very red colors. The deep K-band limit provided by UKIDSS allows for finding more heavily-reddened quasars at higher redshifts as compared with previous work using FIRST and 2MASS. We selected 87 ca...

The Color Selection of Quasars from Redshifts 5 to 10: Cloning and Discovery

We present simulations of quasar colors, magnitudes, and numbers at redshifts 5 < z < 10 based on our discovery of ten new high-redshift quasars and the cloning of lower redshift Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars. The ten quasars have redshifts ranging from z = 4.7 to z = 5.3 and i-magnitudes of 20.21 to 20.94. The natural diversity of spectral features in the cloned sample allows more re...

Six More Quasars at Redshift 6 Discovered by the Canada-france High-z Quasar Survey

We present imaging and spectroscopic observations for six quasars at z ≥ 5.9 discovered by the CanadaFrance High-z Quasar Survey (CFHQS). The CFHQS contains sub-surveys with a range of flux and area combinations to sample a wide range of quasar luminosities at z ∼ 6. The new quasars have luminosities 10 to 75 times lower than the most luminous SDSS quasars at this redshift. The least luminous q...

The Sdss-iv Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Quasar Target Selection

As part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) IV the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) will improve measurements of the cosmological distance scale by applying the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) method to quasar samples. eBOSS will adopt two approaches to target quasars over 7500 deg. First, a “CORE” quasar sample will combine the optical selection in ugriz using a li...

National University Bright Quasar Survey in Optical ( SNUQSO ) I : First Phase Observations and Results

We present results from the first phase of the Seoul National University Bright Quasar Survey in Optical (SNUQSO) as well as its basic observational setup. Previous and current large area surveys have been successful in identifying many quasars, but they could have missed bright quasars due to their survey design. In order to help complete the census of bright quasars, we have performed spectro...
